Abstract

Background. Streptococcus mutans are the primary cause of dental caries. As a natural material cocoa is contains polyphenol compounds which have an antimicrobial agent through antiglucosiltransferase process. In this research, the minimum inhibitory contetration of cocoa, that can reduce the contagion of cocoa, is observed. Purpose. This research aims to develop dental materials sourced from natural materials which are cocoa and to know an effective concentration of cocoa as a natural material to reduce the number of Streptococcus mutans. Method. The method used in this study was antimicrobial test of serial dilution with concentration of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, 3,13%, 1,56%, and 0,78%. Result. There were no significant difference of the concentration 100%, 50%, 25% with concentration 12,5% (p>0,05). Where on the concentration100%, 50%, 25% Sterptococcus mutans can not grow. This indicate that on the concentration of 12,5% can detain the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Conclusion. The minimum inhibitory concentration of cocoa extract to inhibit Streptococcus mutans growth was of 12,5%.
