Abstract

Background. Many components of fixed orthodontic appliances can cause food debris and plaque that are difficult to be cleaned. The orthodontic patient and the operator should pay attention to patient oral hygiene. Optimal result can be attained not only by tooth brushing but using mouthwash as well. Purpose. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness between Povidone Iodine 1% and Chlorhexidine 0,2% mouthwash in inhibiting plaque accumulation in fixed orthodontic patients. Method. Clinical experimental with same subject, pre-test and post-test control group design, and an anova repeated measures at 95% confidence level to test the differences between the three treatment. In the first appointment a disclosing gel was put on the teeth of 15 fixed orthodontic patients and then the patients are asked to brushed the teeth until the disclosing gel disappear, and then gargling with plain water (I) and the patients are asked to fast for 4 hours. After that the teeth are scored for OPI. The procedure is repeated for the second and third appointment and the patients are asked to gargle with Chlorhexidine 0,2% (II) and Povidone Iodine 1% (III) respectively. Results. There is significant difference between treatment I and II, between treatment I and III but no significant difference between treatment II and III. Conclusion. There is no significant difference of plaque accumulation in fixed orthodontic patients after gargling with Povidone Iodine 1% and Chlorhexidine 0,2%.
