Abstract
Background. Periodontitis is characterized by periodontal tissue destruction such as destruction of collagen fibers, periodotal ligament and alveolar bone that cause tooth mobility. Destruction of collagen fibers is caused by increase of collagenase level. Low dose Doxycycline can decrease the collagenase level by bind the active site of collagenase. Purpose. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of low dose doxycycline in increasing the amount of collagen fiber in wistar’s periodontal ligament which is inoculated by A.actinomycetemcomitans. Method. This study was experimental laboratories. Twenty seven Rattus norvegicus strain wistar are being used for thirty days. Twenty seven Rattus norvegicus strain wistar were devided into three groups; control, A.actinomycetemcomitans; A.actinomycetemcomitans+Doxycycline. Mallory Azan stain are being used to determine the collagen fibers. Collagen fibers are evaluated histologically by electron microscope. Data were analyzed statistically using Kruskal-Walis and Mann-Whitney test. Result. Examination showed there were significant different in collagen fibers level between each group (p<0.05). Conclusion. Low dose Doxycycline can increase the amount of collagen fibers in wistar’s periodontal ligament.
