Abstract

Background. Candida Albicans is believed to be the cause of denture stomatitis. Garlic contains Allicin which has antimicrobes and antifungal activieties especially against Candida Albicans. Purpose. To evaluate the number of Candida Albicans colonies that grow on acrylic resin plates after immersed in garlic infusion. Material and Method. 28 sterile acrylic resins plates were immersed in saliva for pellicle formation and immersed in Candida Albicans suspension. They were then incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. They were divided into 4 groups equally. Group 1 was immersed in 15 mg/ml garlic infusion, group 2 was immersed in 25 mg/ml garlic infusion, group 3 was immersed in 50 mg/ml garlic infusion, and group 4 was immersed in sterile aquadest for 24 hours. Sobouroud’s broth was used after the immersion so that the Candida Albicans came off. Then, Sobouraud’s Dextrose agar was used for growing Candida Albicans. Colonies were counted using colony forming unit (CFU). Result. The mean and standard deviation (in CFU) obtained for each group were: 1: 49.8571/6.81734, 2: 27.8571/8.49370, 3: 8.5714/5.15937, 4: 73.4286/8.28366. Conclusion. Garlic infusion decreases the number of Candida Albicans colonies in each group significantly (p<0.05)
