Abstract

Objectives :Color alteration in acrylic resins is contributed by one of its main property which is water absorption which also includes the absorption of coloring and chemical agents. Sodium perborate is the active ingredient found in effervescent denture cleansers while sodium bicarbonate or more commonly known as baking soda is a house hold item mainly used for baking cakes but with the right dosage it may serve as a home made denture cleanser. Methods:The experiment is conducted by studying the water absorption property of the acrylic resin when immersed in sodium perborate and sodium bicarbonate to observe if there are color changes after immersion for 10,70,140 minutes in both immersing liquids .Seven samples were used for each experiment. OPT-101 and digital microvolt were used to observe color alterations of the acrylic resins that may occur.One-way ANOVA,and HSD (High Significance Difference) with a 0.05 significance degree level were used for the statistical analysis of this experiment. Results: The result of this experiment showed color alterations after the heat cured acrylic resins were immersed in sodium perborate and sodium bicarbonate for 10,70,and 140 minutes. In the process color alterations occured in the 70 minute and 140 minute immersion.Sodium bicarbonate solution showed less discoloration compared to the sodium perborate solution Conclusion:The conclusion of this experiment is that sodium bicarbonate solution shows less discoloration of the acrylic resins than the sodium perborate solution and serves as a viable substitute for denture cleansers sold in stores.
