Abstract

Background: Isotonic drink is a kind of sport drinks that contain carbohydrate less than 10%. Carbohydrate’s fermentation of these drinks will cause decreasing in pH of saliva, and a critical decrease in pH of saliva, can occur demineralization which is causing dental caries. Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the difference of pH saliva between post consumption of isotonic drink contain 6% carbohydrate and 4% carbohydrate. Methods: In this study, each subject was performed 1 control using distilled and 2 treatment water using 2 brand isotonic drinks, which was isotonic drinks contain 6% carbohydrate and 4% carbohydrate and performed for 3 days. After brushing their teeth and fasting in an hour, each subject was instructed to spit and measured as initial pH, then rinsing and consuming each beverage brands, and then instructed to spit at minute 2, 12, 22, 32, 42, 52, and 62 and was measured. Results of pH measurement from saliva compared from that three drinks. Result: There were differences change of the saliva pH after consuming each beverages. Conclusion: The change of pH saliva after consuming isotonic drinks contain 6% carbohydrate is lower than 4% carbohydrate.
