Abstract

Background. Caries is a multifactorial chronic infection which can cause demineralisation of hard tissue of teeth, organic material damage, bacterial invation, and death of pulp. Young children with poor habits such as drinking bottle milk before sleeping or go to sleep without brushing teeth are more likely to experience caries. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to know the association between the frequency of bottle milk feeding at bedtime and caries prevalence among children 1 to 3 years of age in East Surabaya. Method. This study used the simple random sampling method and analized with odds ratio estimate. After signing informed consent form, the parents answered a questionnaire in order to evaluate risk factor for dental caries, including the frequency of drinking bottle milk at bedtime, economic status, dietary habits, parents education level, etc and the children were examined by the investigator. Result. Children with bottle milk feeding at bedtime are more risky to severe caries than those who are not. There are 28 of 34 children (82,4%) with 1-2 times of bottle milk feeding at bedtime, 10 of 12 children (83,3%) with 3-4 times of bottle milk feeding at bedtime, and 4 of 4 children (100%) with more than 4 times of bottle milk feeding at bedtime severe caries. Conclusion. According to this study, children with bottle milk feeding at bedtime are more risky than those who are not and the caries prevalence is affected by the frequency of bottle milk feeding.
