Abstract

Background: The incidence of fractured acrylic denture base is a common problem found in clinical practices. One of the solution to decrease the incidence rate of denture fractures is by strengthening the denture itself by means of embedding Stainless steel wire inside the denture base. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the transverse strength of resin acrylic plate that are reinforced by stainless wire with varying diameter of 1.0mm, 0.9mm, and 0.8mm, comparing that to resin acrylic plate that are not reinforced. Materials and Method: The acrylic plates that are used are heat cured acrylics (Dentsply, QC-20) and made according to ADA’s standard dimension (65x10x2,5mm). During “dough stage” the sandblasted stainless steel wire is embedded into the mold and the acrylic is then cured according to the manufacture’s instruction. 3-point bending machine is used to evaluate the transverse strength of these acrylic plates and the results are then analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Result: The mean transverse strength of the acrylic plate that are reinforced with stainless steel wires with diameters of 1.0mm, 0.9mm, 0.8mm are 117.528MPa, 126.744MPa and 113.556MPa respectively, while the unreinforced acrylic plate’s average transverse strength is 111.612MPa. There was no significant increase of transverse strength between the reinforced acrylic group compared to the nonreinforced acrylic group, since P(0.081) >α 0.05. Conclusion: There was an increase in transverse strength in the group that was reinforced with stainless steel wire, although not significant. The acrylic plate that was reinforced with stainless steel wire of 0.9mm diameter was the most effective among the rest of the reinforced group.
