Abstract

Background. Periodontal disease starts with gingivitis and if left untreated, it will develop into periodontitis which is irreversible and may lead to tooth loss. The number of bacteria present on the tooth and gingival can stimulate polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) to release oxygen free radicals or Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). ROS and antioxidants should be balanced. If this balance were disturbed, there will be a condition called oxidative stress which mantain the inflammation in gingiva. Razor clam (Solen spp) is one of East Java sea comodity. It’s known has flavanoid and taurin as antioxidant to reduce free radicals by transvering their hidrogen atom. Purpose. The aim of this study were to prove the antioxidant activity of razor clam extract (Solen spp) and to determine the effective dose of antioxidants in saliva of gingivitis patients. Method. This research was done in-vitro experiment from the saliva of chronic gingivitis patients, male, at least 20 years old, do not smoke, do not have a systemic disease and were not taking any medications. Results. There where significant differences of razor clam antioxidant acivity (p<0.05) at concentration 0.75% and 0,375%. IC50 value was shown in concentration 0.046% (53.401%±16,578). Conclusion. Razor clam extract (Solen spp) has an active antioxidant power against salivary gingivitis patients.
