Abstract

Denture stomatitis also well-known as Denture sore mouth or Chronic atrophic candidiosis is a multicausal disease which appears as a phatological chance on oral mucose covered by denture. The ethiology of denture stomatitis is a complex interaction between many causes such as trauma caused by denture, bad oral hygiene of the host, and also fungal infection disease mainly caused by candida. Denture stomatitis can be treste locally with Nystatin as the drug of choice and alternative drug such as Propolis. Nystatin is a polyelene antifungal drug which is sensitive for moulds and yield infections including Candida infection. Propolis consist of many chemical ingredients that has rich biological activity, such as flavonoid (pinocembrin, galangin), phenol (caffeic acid and ferulic acid), phenolic ester (caffeic acid phenethyl ester or CAPE), and ester. Those ingredients has many biological activity, especially antifungal effect. Purpose. To provide the difference of antifungal effect on nystatin and propolis (bee hives sealer) on Denture stomatitis based on the time of healing and the cardinal symptom elimination. Material and Method. 20 subject suffers from denture stomatitis are defided into two groups and each group consist of 10 subjects. First group are treated with Nystatin and the second group are treated with Propolis. The cardinal symptoms appears on mucosal wich covered by denture on day 0, day 3, day 6, day 9, day 12, day 14, day 16 , and day 18 are evaluated. T-test are used to analyze the data and Annova is used for further analysis. Result. There are no significant difference between antifungal effect of Nystatin and Propolis againt Denture stomatitis if evaluated by the time of healing. But if evaluated by the process of cardinal symptom elimination there are significant difference between Nystatin and Propolis on Denture stomatitis. Conclusion. Both Nystatin and Propolis shows no significant difference in antifungal effect on the time of healing in Denture stomatitis but Propolis shows more effective to the cardinal symptom elimination which are Dolor, Tumor and Rubor rather than Nystatin.
