Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know the prevalence and infection degree of gastrointestinal helminthiasis on cat in some pet shops at Surabaya City. One hundred nineteen cat’s faecal were collected from some pet shops. Faecal were examined by native, sedimentation, floatation techniques and the number of worm eggs were counted. The result showed that the prevalence rate of helminthiasis on cat was 30.3%. The prevalence of helminthiasis in market was the highest (43.6%) followed by mall (22.2%) and cattery (14.3%). The worms species that found on cat were Ancylostoma tubaeforme, Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina, Diphyllobothrium mansoni and Dipylidium caninum. Infection degree of gastrointestinal helminthiasis on cat in some pet shops at Surabaya City were relatively mild because the number of worm eggs in range 0-500 but heavy infection found in market (7.3%) and moderate infection found in mall (2.8%). According to the regression tree analysis, the prevalence and infection degree of gastrointestinal helminthiasis on cat in some pet shops at Surabaya City were influenced by place, age and sex. It showed significant differences in the prevalence and infection degree from place, age and sex (p<0.05).
