Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the contamination of bacterium of Salmonella sp on local chicken eggs that were sold as a component of herbal medicine in Sidoarjo. A total of 36 eggs were collected by stratified random sampling strategy from a total of 18 herbal medicine seller in Sidoarjo. Salmonella sp was detected by culturing yolks in tetrathionate broth, then streaked at Salmonella Shigella agar, then continued with Gram stain and biochemistry test covering cultivation at tripel sugar iron agar, sulphide indole motility, Simmon citrate agar, and urea agar. A sample was estimated as Salmonella sp contamination if Salmonella sp was detected in the respective material. The result indicated that during August until September 2008 5,56% from 36 sample of local chiken eggs which were sold as a component of herbal medicine in Sidoarjo was positively infected by Salmonella sp.
