Abstract

Smoking behavior is one of the biggest problems of health in the world. From year to year, the number of smokers were increased, and most of them are male. The main purpose in prevention of diseases related smoking behavior is to stop the childrens becomes smokers and help adult smoker to stop the habit. One way of prevention efforts is by decreasing the number of smoker teachers in elementary schools. Elementary schools in Trawas district are an education institution which have teachers with smoking behavior. The general purpose of this research is to obtain the view of the smoking behavior among the teachers in the elementary schools in Trawas district. The specific purposes is to get the view of the smoking pattern, knowledge level, smoking perception, social environment, availability and affordability of cigarette, and school regulation related to the smoking behavior. This research is descriptive aimed to provide a view of smoking behavior in thirty teachers in elementary schools in Trawas district. The research was carried out during May to June 2010. The instruments used to get the information is questioner. The research result is an illustration that most of the teachers in elementary schools in Trawas district have more than twenty years in smoking period with consumption in five up to fifteen cigarettes per day. They have low to middle categories in knowledge level about cigarette. They assume that cigarette give them advantages than the draw backs. All of their friends also have the smoking habit. The cigarette is easy to get in groceries nearby their houses and schools, besides the price of the cigarette is affordable. This habit is encouraged by the weakness of the regulation and punishments related to the smoking habit in elementary schools. It can be concluded that smoking behavior among the teachers in elementary schools in Trawas district shows alarming condition. The suggestion that could gave were should be more standardized regulation with real implementation related to the smoking habit in school environment. There also should be a firm punishment for violation of the rules.
