Abstract

Noise can cause hearing loss. The cases of hearing loss in PT. ALP Petro Industry Pasuruan workers have been increasing since last year. The last technique to control of noise in workplace is using ear protective equipment. This research was conducted to find out the factors related to the behavior of workers in the use of ear protective equipment in Refinery unit and Maintenance unit at PT. ALP Petro Industry Pasuruan. Ear protective equipment usage behavior can be influenced by personal factors, occupational factors, and occupational health safety programs. This research is an observational study and the design of the study is using cross sectional. The research sample of 46 people was taken by using simple random sampling method. The dependent variable of the study is the ear protective equipment usage behavior. The independent variables of the study are personal factors (age, education level, years of service, and level of the knowledge), occupational factors (supervision and the availability of the ear protective equipment), and occupational health safety program related to noise control. The data was taken by using interviews, questionnaires, and observations. The analysis of the correlation was tested using Contingency Coefficient test and Spearman test. The results of the study showed that the majority of workers (87%) had good behavior in the use of ear protective equipment. Factors which were correlated with the use of ear protective equipment behavior were age (p = 0,023), years of work (p = 0,003), and the availability of the ear protective equipment (p=0,030). The management company has been creating and implementing several programs related occupational health safety in noise control.
