Abstract

There are various types of hazards in the Candi Baru sugar mill, one of them is physical or mechanical hazard. Hazard must be controlled to avoid accidents. There are several ways to control hazards, they are elimination, substitution, engineering technique, and PPE. The usage of PPE is a behavior that can be influenced by several factors. This research was conducted to analyze the factors that affect PPE usage by workers. These factors include individual characteristics (age and years of work), knowledge, attitude, and the provision of PPE. This research was an observational analytic with cross sectional design. Sample was 80 workers taken from the 100 workers employed in the improvement and maintenance of the production machine used simple random sampling technique. Filling out the questionnaire by workers and observations conducted to obtain data on the variables studied. Individual characteristic, knowledge, attitude and provision of PPE were independent variable, while the usage of PPE was dependent variable. Correlation was tested using the Spearman test with α = 0.05. Most of the respondents aged 47-55 years (41.3%), have 17-24 years period of work (33.8%), have a good knowledge (66.3%), have a good attitude (90%), the provision of PPE was good enough (73.8%), and 61.3% always using PPE (61.3%). Based on this research showed that there was relation between knowledge (p value = 0.001), attitude (p value = 0.001) and the provision of PPE (p value = 0.002) with PPE usage. It is recommended that the company to provide safety induction, safety talk and training about PPE for workers, and print media related to OSH matter in the area of the plant, improve the supervision of the use of PPE, as well as implement reward and punishment system.
