Abstract

The high number of traffic accidents each year is in line with the increasing usage of motorcycles by various level community. The phenomenon of under age children riding motorcycles accounted for the incidence of traffic accidents involving junior high school students. This study aimed to determine the relationship of sex and behavioral factors motorcyclists with the traffic accident in Wonokromo Sub district Surabaya at junior high school students in 2015. This research design was observational analytical cross-sectional study design. The sample was junior high school student in Wonokromo Sub district Surabaya who became active bikers minimum in the last six months and was in seventh or eighth classes in the academic year 2014-2015. Respondents consisted of 100 people who were selected by using the technique of two stage cluster random sampling. Data obtained through independently questionnaires filling by the respondent. The independent variables were sex, level of knowledge, the use of helmet, the use of headlights, the use of traffic lane, the use of mobile phones and driving speed. Data was analyzed using chi-square test (α = 0.05). Results of the data analysis showed the significance of sex relations and behavioral factors with a traffic accident as follows, sex (p = 0.282), the level of knowledge (p = 0.003), use of the helmet (p = 0.750), the use of headlights (p = 0.649 ), the use of traffic lane (p = 0.019), the use of mobile phones (p = 0.023), and the driving speed (p = 0.017). The conclusion of this study is the level of knowledge, the use of traffic lanes, use of mobile phones, and the speed of driving associated with traffic accidents in Wonokromo Sub district Surabaya in junior high school students in 2015. The role of parents in not to give permission for an under age child riding a motorcycle and the children awareness are required to support the efforts of the police and schools in minimizing the number of traffic accidents involving underage children, in particular the junior high school students.
