Abstract

School is strategic target in the health promotion. School is an organized place, that the rule is easily to applied. Health education in school can’t be separated from the role of school’s policy. The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between health education and school’s policy with hand washing and throwing garbage behavior in primary school children. This research was cross sectional study with quantitative and qualitative approaches. Samples of research were students from fourth and fifth grade, head master, UKS worker, and coordinator of student. Samples were choosen with statified random sampling method. The dependent variables were hand washing and throwing garbage behavior. More over the intermediate variables were knowledge, attitude, facilities, probability, and social support. and the independent variables were health education and school’s policy. The result of this research showed that health education was associated with knowledge (p=0,039), and attitude (p=0,002) of the students in SDN Dr. Soetomo I Surabaya in related to washing hands behavior. Furthermore health education was also associated with knowledge (p=0/003), and attitude (p=0,009) in related to throwing garbage behavior. School’s policy was only associated with hand washing facilities (p=0,013). Attitude (p=0,032) and opportunity (p=0,048) were associated with hand washing behavior, whereas throwing garbage behavior was associated with stundent’s attitude (p=0,013). The conclusion of this research is there is association between health education with washing hands and throwing garbage behavior through student’s attitude variable. The suggest for school is implementing of health education to entire school community.
