Abstract

This study discusses about the struggle of a child as a victim of abuse and neglect, trying to struggle and survive in the bitter life and accomplishes her dream as a barrister portrayed in the main character of Ugly named Clare. The focus of this study is to describe Clare’s struggle by identifying the reasons and process her struggle to become a person that she admires. The text is analyzed by using psychological approach, applying Alfred Adler’s theory of individual psychology to study Clare’s psychology to adolescence. Adler’s theory has some important principles used to analyze Clare’s psychology, especially her struggle to be a barrister. In the process of analyzes, the writer uses qualitative method by conducting descriptive analysis and explanation throughout events and dialogues in the memoir. The study is also conducted by collecting more information about related issues from sources such as text books, articles, academic journals, statistical data, library research and Internet as the main electronic source. The study resulted with the following knowledge: there is a great power behind inferior people which makes them strive and struggle to reach their dream.
