Abstract

The practice of witchcraft can be found in almost all society. Jodi Picoult’s novel, Salem Falls is one of the novels telling about the practice of witchcraft. Seeing this phenomenon, the thesis discusses about the major character which has become a victim of the practice. The thesis also discuses about the witchcraft practices as well as the strategy used by the main character of the novel to against the practices and to free himself from being accused as a rapist for twice. The first accusation of being rapist makes the major character pass his eight months in jail sentence. Jack St. Bride does not want to accuse as a rapist for the second time so that he does his best to free from any accusation of something never made. The changing of the character in the story can be determined that the major character is round because at the first accusation he just accept it with the consequence is live in a jail. While at the second accusation, he wants to prove that he does not rape Gillian. Therefore, he has strategy to prove the accusation. He helped by Jordan, his attorney, to search the evidences related to witchcraft. They also make collaborate to present the witnesses. The result from those evidences and witnesses are Jack is free from the accusation. Besides, she gets enlightenment for repairing her name and status in Jack’s society. To support the analysis, the thesis uses the New Criticism theory which focused on characterization.
