Abstract
How to be Popular is a novel written by Meg Cabot. One of many issues which are presented in the novel is about construction of a popular girl which is portrayed in the tips. The tips are written in the “Old Book” that belongs to Kitty, Jason’s grandmother. Jason is Stephanie’s best friend. Stephanie finds it in Kitty’s attic. The word “popular” in the novel means being liked, appreciated and respected by people in the society. This analysis aims to study what kind of girl that is liked, appreciated and respected by the people around her. The study also examines the construction seen from the time distance between the era of the tips making (1980s) and the era of the manifestation of the tips by Stephanie (2000s). The writer uses qualitative method in analyzing the work. The applied theory is feminist theory by Simone de Beauvoir. Based on the tips, a popular girl is a girl who is active, has a social life, does what she loves, has confidence, has respects and tenderness and is reliable. In other words, the tips construct a popular girl as a leader. The writer also finds out that the construction can be more accepted in Stephanie’s era than in Kitty’s era.
