Abstract

Regarding the issue of inclusive education as a new type of education system which has uniqueness in the students and teachers, the teaching strategies performed by the teachers to make the normal and special need students comprehend, as well as the lack of study conducted on the speech characteristics of the general class teachers, the writer has conducted a study about the speech characteristics of the general class teachers in inclusive classroom. This study aims to find the speech characteristics of general class teachers through their intonation, speech rate and repetition. In order to find it, the writer focuses on the types of intonation and the most frequent type of intonation, the speech rate, and the types of repetition along with the most frequent type of repetition used in the general class teachers’ speech. The data were collected by videotaping and then converted them into WAV file which will then be transcribed orthographically. In analyzing the types of intonation, the data are identified by Praat Software and classified into three categories of intonation based on Wells (2006), the speech rate is classified into three categories based on Griffiths (Lynch, 1996), while the repetition is classified based on Coates (1996). To know the most frequent types of intonation and repetition, the same categories of the data classification are counted and converted into percentages. In intonation, the general class teachers used the three types of intonation that are fall (), fall-rise (/), and rise (/). The most frequent types of intonation used were the rise intonation. In speech rate, the teachers frequently used the slow rate of speech. In repetition, the teachers performed all the types of repetition (word, phrase, clause, and semantic repetition), except the sentence repetition. The syllable repetitions were also performed by the teachers and the most frequent types of repetition was the word repetition. Thus, the speech characteristics of the general class teachers in inclusive classroom are the rise intonation, the slow rate speech, and the word repetition.
