Abstract

This thesis is studying about Junichiro Tanizaki’s worldview of cultural clash through his novels Naomi, Some Prefer Nettles, and The Key. The study specifically discusses his worldview of transformation in Japanese culture and the conflict associated with the transformation. The worldview concerned with the issue of cultural clash between Japanese traditional cultures and values with American cultures and values. The writer of the thesis tries to find out the worldview by analyzing the characters of the novels and Tanizaki’s biography. To support the analysis the writer of the thesis uses expressive theory and is supported by biographical approach. It appears that Tanizaki’s worldview of cultural clash came up from his experiences in life which he reflected those experiences in the novels. This thesis is an attempt to describe Tanizaki’s life in the hope that this will throw light on some of the personal perceptions that are explored in his fictions.
