Abstract

This study investigates the shortened terms of ministers and ministries in the era of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and how these shortened terms are formed. In analyzing these shortened terms, the writer used Kridalaksana’s theory. Kridalaksana categorizes the shortening processes into five categories: abbreviation, acronym, blend, clipping and alphabetical symbol. The findings show that the majority of the ministers and ministries were fully shortened. The findings also show that variations occur in shortening process. There are three kinds of variation that occur in shortening process: the variation of shortened forms, shortening variations of the words that have the same derivational process, and the variation of shortened terms. The use of shortened terms is popular for two reasons. First, practical reason, shortened terms can shorten a long phrase. Second, historically, shortened terms are one of Soeharto’s remnants which are hard to be forgotten.
