Abstract

This study of speech text allows a closer look at the strategy of a person how he uses the discourse for explaining facts or event strategy, the coherence of the sentence. To see the maintaining of coherence, the writer saw the cohesive devices. They are the primary determinant of a text. Each of these types signals that the interpretation of the passage depends on something else, which is verbally explicit. Taking a discourse analysis (DA) perspective, this study took the data from Pancasila speech on June 01, 1945. Pancasila speech was aimed to prepare the Independence of Indonesia and later on Pancasila became the philosophy of Indonesia. Pancasila speech was delivered by Sukarno, who was the nationalist figure. The findings revealed that Sukarno used some conjunctions to maintain coherence in his speech. Therefore, his message in Pancasila speech could be easily delivered to the masses. Keywords: coherence, discourse analysis, Pancasila speech, Sukarno, cohesive devices, nationalism.
