Abstract

After the destruction of the WTC Twin Towers in New York on 11 September 2003, in the name of global war on terrorism, America started attacking the Middle East countries beginning with Afghanistan and then Iraq, both of which have large numbers of Muslims. The attack to the Middle East countries had a great effect in the rise of negative sentiment toward many aspects related to America. One possible aspect is the sentiment towards the language, i.e. American English. This thesis was designed to examine the language attitude of Muslim students toward American English and British English as the comparison. Edwards (1982) stated that attitudes influence learning, and positive attitudes are likely to result in better learning. This thesis tried to find out whether the Muslim students have positive attitude towards American or British English. The concept of attitudes was based on the discussion by Allport (1935), Gardner (1985a) and Fazio (1986). This investigation was conducted by means of quantitative descriptive approach, usin; arithmetic mean. The data was gained by distributing questionnaire to 32 res,,gndents. The population of this study comprises the members of Muslim Students Union (SKI) of Airlangga University The result of this study revealed the attitudes of a group of Muslim Students Union (SKI) members and also their motivation to learn English. The result revealed that the respondents showed positive attitudes toward British English. Further they seemed to be more integretively motivated.
