Abstract
This study is concentrated on the portrayal of the Black's life in the novel by Jacqueline Woodson entitled Hush which represents the life of the Black American in general. From the portrayal, it will show how the Black American is still questioning their identity. They have their own way in recognizing their identity and it is pictured in the novel. The researcher applies the postcolonial theory with the concept of identity by a postcolonial theorist Homi K. Bhabha in determining the identity from postcolonial point of view. The analysis on identity, which is questioned by the Black Americans, is seen through the statements of the characters and the portrayal that already found before. From this study, there are the portrayals of the Black American life in the reality, especially in questioning their identity which is shown in Jacqueline Woodson's Hush. The identity that is questioned by the Black Americans in the novel is because the double consciousness, as Blacks and Americans in the same time, occur in their life.
