Abstract

Bob Marley and the Wailers’ The Legend music album is the best-selling reggae record of all time, and it is an example of the concepts of freedom. The music album itself contains Robert Nesta Marley’s greatest hits written by himself during his music career. However, the most interesting controversy to be questioned is Marley’s background when it becomes the big issues in his work. Marley believed in Rastafarian, and this faith describes the concept of freedom as the ways to conquer oppressions created by colonialism that could bring people to the misery. Expressive approach, Symbolism approach and Biographical approach will be applied to analyze the concept of freedom that lies behind the composing of the lyrics. As illustrated in the lyrics, the concept of freedom is related to the term of ‘one love’ as presented by Rastafarian. ‘One love’ tells that no one will be subjected or objected if people have feeling of affection, tolerant and respect to each other. Furthermore, ‘one love’ can be supported by ‘four freedoms’ presented by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president of United States, they are, freedom of speech and expression, freedom of every person to worship God in his own way, freedom for want, and freedom from fear. From those categories we can see that basically, there’s no absolute freedom and the relation of freedom and humans’ need cannot be alienated each other. Because when humans live in freedom, there will be a space to utilize the humans’ potencies and qualities. Therefore, freedom that is given to humans becomes the major factor of their success for fulfilling their needs.
