Abstract

In reading picture books with the younger children, female siblings conduct extratextual interaction to aid the children in understanding the story. Therefore, this study is aimed at knowing the extratextual interaction applied by female sibling in the reading picture books to the children. The data were collected by videotaping four female siblings and children in engaging reading picture book. Then the data were analyzed by using coding procedure used by Natsiopoulou, Souloutis, and Kyridis (2003).The data showed that one participant conducted eight categories, attention, names, asking about names, feedback, repetition, prediction, elaboration, relating story to the real life, and clarifying. Then one participant conducted two categories, repetition and prediction. Other two participants merely read the printed materials written in the books. The data indicate that the most frequent extratextual used is clarifying. The possible reason of conducting clarifying more frequently than others is to give clearer view to the child about certain incidents, objects, characters, and setting.
