Abstract

This study investigates the anxiety of students in learning English as a foreign language in English Department students of Airlangga University. Fifty five English Department students participated in this study. The participants completed a 33 item questionnaire of Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). By calculating the mean, the result of the study showed that generally students experience at the stage of moderate anxiety level. Statement” I worry about failing the English class” reaches the highest mean. Among four categories, fear of negative evaluation stands out as the category that the most students are anxious about, followed by communicative apprehension, test anxiety and attitude toward English language class. By comparing male and female students’ mean score, the result showed that male student feel less anxious compared to female students.
