Abstract
Nowadays, there are many international standardized schools (SBI) in Indonesia which use the digital classrooms in teaching and learning process. Based on that phenomenon, this study wanted to identify the use of digital classrooms in one of the international standardized schools in Surabaya. This study was conducted to analyze the use of digital classrooms in teaching English in an International Standardized School (SBI): A Case Study at SMP Negeri 1 Surabaya. Digital classroom is a classroom which uses digital technology and digital devices to support the teaching and learning activities. The writer would like to conduct this study to answer the question of how the teachers used the digital classrooms in teaching English, what the teachers’ and the students’ perceptions of the digital classrooms, and how to improve the use of digital classrooms at SMP Negeri 1 Surabaya. The writer used the quantitative approach as the method of the study. The writer used convenient sampling to select the respondents who will be asked to answer the questionnaires. Fifty one students of 7E and 7I classes and six English teachers were chosen to answer the questionnaires. In analyzing the data, the writer counted the average of the closed-ended questionnaires and summarized the answers of the opened-ended questionnaires and the mixed of close and open ended question. As the results, the writer discovered that both teachers and students in 7E and 7I classes state they often use the computer with projection system, presentation software, and internet (web searches) in English teaching and learning process in the digital classrooms. Both of them state they sometimes use email/ discussion group in the digital classrooms and rarely use spreadsheet program. Most of the students in 7E and 7I classes and the teachers expect that laptop/ computer class and power sockets need to be added in each class of SMP Negeri 1 Surabaya. Most of the students in 7E and 7I classes state that the digital classroom is interesting enough since the English learning process become more joyful and it is not monotonous. The English teachers state that the digital classroom is helpful in English teaching process since they can get and explain materials easily. The students in 7E and 7I classes and the English teachers state that the connection of Wi-Fi should be increased so that the process of teaching and learning in the digital classroom will be more effective. The writer concluded that the use of digital classrooms in the English classes at SMP Negeri 1 Surabaya should be improved by maximizing the use of class website since the English teachers just sometimes use it in the class
