Abstract

The anarchist behavior (bullying, fighting among certain football fans, breaking stadium facility) seemingly supported by various symbols on the shirts worn by Bonek (Persebaya football fans club) in football match invites concern to reveal the ideology behind words and pictures printed on the shirt. This research aims to reveal certain ideology of words and pictures printed on Bonek shirts worn by them in the match. The aspects explored are connotative and denotative meanings of the symbols, color, and other signs printed on Bonek shirt. This research uses qualitative method, not only employing textual analysis but also interview to Bonek shirt users in every class level in Persebaya football match. The complete data is then examined by Semiotics theory of Roland Barthes which is appropriate to reveal certain ideology of cultural product. The study finds that the symbols printed on Bonek shirt represent the ideology of heroism derived from ‘Bung Tomo’ spirit during the colonial war againts the Dutch. Another ideologiocal reading reveals that the myth of heroism serves as an alibi of mass movement which often ‘justifies’ the way Bonek supporters conduct ‘unpleasant’ or reckless behaviors.
