Abstract
TThis study attempts to discuss the breakup of black families under oppression as portrayed in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The novel which was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe was published in 1852. Uncle Tom’s Cabin portrays white people as masters while African-American and colored American as their slaves. In this novel, white people consider the slaves as their properties who could be traded and used as they please. Most treatments done by the white masters to African-Americans and colored were for their pleasure. Sometimes white people asserting themselves superior to blacks, then comes stereotypes and prejudices that lead to racial discrimination. The main concern of this study is to analyze racial discrimination that appears in America presented in the novel using systemic racism, oppression theory by Feagin as the point of view in guiding the research. After examining the object, this study finds that racial discrimination towards African-Americans happened because it was structured and all oppressions were accepted only because of the white’s interests.
