Abstract

This study is a sociolinguistic study which focuses on language choice. The objectives of this study are to describe language choice of thestudents of Al-Khoziny Islamic boarding school to describe what languages are used in different domains and to find the reason why they choose to use those languages. The data are obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The result of the data collection shows that there are three languages chosen to be used by the students. These include Javanese, Madurese and Indonesian. The data are then analyzed based on Holmes’ theories of language choice, social factors, and social dimensions. The overall finding of the study reveals that the language choice of the students is much influenced by social factors and social dimensions. The most influenced factor is addressee.In addition, based on the social dimension, the relationship between the addressee and the addresser can be described as close.
