Abstract

Alayers’ language attitudes towards alay language and Indonesian language were observed in this study. Some people argued that alayers always have positive attitudes towards alay language and negative attitudes towards Indonesian language. Thus, the goals of this study were to know whether or not the alayers have positive attitudes towards alay language and negative attitudes towards Indonesian language. This study analyzed the alayers’ language attitudes by using observation and questionnaire. The thirty participants were facebook users, students of SMP 26 Surabaya, and SMA 5 Surabaya who are still 14 to 17 years old. The participants must be 14 to 17 years old because they are still in the state of revealing themselves and always interested in something new like alay language. Their language attitudes were analyzed mainly by using Agheyisi‟s and Fishman‟s theory and supported by Fasold‟s, Gardner‟s & Lambert‟s, and Garvin‟s & Mathiot‟s theories. The results reveal that the alayers have both positive and negative attitudes towards alay language and positive attitudes towards Indonesian language. It is concluded that the popularity of alay language will be disappeared soon and that the preferred language is still Indonesian language. It is recommended that an online questionnaire is used in further research since alay language is mostly used in social networks.
