Abstract
This discusses Dean’s loyalty to the Earnshaws and its effects in Wuthering Heights narrated by Emily Bronte in the perspective of Greimas’ structural theory. It is analyzed by using six fundamental actant and function model. There are three binary oppositions in this theory; subject >< object, destinateur >< destinataire, adjuvant >< opposant. It applies close reading method to analyze five actants and function models to show Dean’s loyalty. Dean helped and solved the Earnshaws’ problem, such as solving Heathclif and Ctaherine love affair, preventing Heathclif’s bad desire to the Earnshaw and so on. In relation ofactant and functional model, she was adjuvant and opposant in the second actant, and opposant in the third and fourth actant to show her loyalty to her master. Dean’s loyalty had a good effect to the Earnshaws’ life because she was succes in solving the Earnshaws’ problem from Heathclif. So that the Earnshaw could start their new life just like beginning. She never had any idea to leave the Earnshaws and decided to serve and dedicate her whole life to the Eanrshaws. It showed that Dean was a loyal maid to the Earnshaws.
