Abstract

This research is a case study on child’s language acquisition. The main focus of this study is on the analysis of phonological alternation of the words produced by a seven-year-old child who suffers from Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) which causes speech delay. A delayed speech child needs some more time to acquire language. Concerning to their language deficits and cognitive dysfunction, the writer is interested in making the study of phonological alternations in the speech of seven- year- old child with SPD. The speech of a child with SPD was analyzed by using three types of phonological alternations: (a) Phonetically conditioned alternations (b) Phonetically & morphologically conditioned alternations, (c) Phonetically & morphologically& lexically conditioned alternations. This study presents further evidence and example of phonological processes relating to the phonological alternation, which involves substitution, assimilation, and syllable structure process. The result of the research indicates types of phonological alternation and processes occur in the child with SPD. As the conclusion is drawn, the result of the study from the phonological process the subject is going through has proven that the participant showed that he did phonological alternation type one and type two, which are phonetically conditioned alternation and phonetically and morphologically conditioned alternation and relating to these alternations, the participant did many substitutions in the bilabial and velar sounds due to the speech delay problem which is suffered by the subject
