Abstract

The Green Mile deals with the discriminative issues in the Louisiana penitentiary in 1932. This is a fiction novel written by Stephen King. The story focuses on the relationship between the guard and the prisoner represented by Paul Edgecombe and John Coffey emerging a particular perception that is considered to be negative. Throughout the story, this perception undergoes some changes. The writer is curious to find out Paul Edgecombe's negative perception of John Coffey depicted in the novel and the process of Paul Edgecombe changing perception toward John Coffey. The Close Reading is applied as the theory to answer the research questions that is focused on the study of character. Moreover, Perception based on psychological, is used as a reference to obtain a deeper understanding of its definition, causes, how it changes, and also the effects of the change. As the results of the analysis, the writer finds an ironic conclusion that is experienced by both characters. Although, Edgecombe's negative perception could completely change into positive, since he undergoes a sequence of experiences, the justice is not fairly applied. On the other hand, Coffey experiences both the discriminative treatments and death punishment inside the bars on ground of race. Justice is difficult to achieve since the majority do not give an equal opportunity for Coffey as the minority.
