Abstract

At 2:46PM Japan Standard Time (JST) on 11th March, 2011, a gigantic earthquake occurred in the Pacific, just off the coast of Tohoku, Japan. The combined earthquake and resulting giant tsunami caused huge damage in eastern Japan. The earthquake’s magnitude was 9.0, the maximum ever recorded in Japan. The tsunami was also historical in terms of its height and area affected. Its run-up height reached over 30 m. As of April 2013, over 24 thousand people were reported as dead or missing. This disaster caused very great damage to houses, buildings, transportations, and another lifeline, which make Japan lost 200-300 million USD. This disaster also caused fire everywhere, gas leaked out and explosion in some reactor nuclear plant and radioactive contamination issue to people live near the power plant. Japan Meteorological Agency named the earthquake as “2011年東北地方太平洋地震” (The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake). Mass media is an important tool to gain information about catastrophic events that is happening now. They give the scope of death, injury, and destruction resulting from disasters. This paper examines how this tragedy was framed by two Japan newspapers in first week after-disaster, and how the framing differences between two newspapers in reporting the same news. To assist in answering such questions, this paper combines two methods are content analysis and framing analysis. Using Entman analysis, it can conclude that both newspapers define the earthquake and tsunami as a natural disaster, so do the causes diagnosis. However, Yomiuri Shinbun and Kahoku Shinpo have different point of view in suggesting the after-disaster remedies.
