Abstract

Since old times, Japanese gain influences from country they had in contact with. Especially in term of language, many words which originated from another country (eg. China, English, German, etc.) are used to enrich the Japanese itself. Those are called Gairaigo or Loanwords. Between those words, some are purely taken as it is and some are modified. The modified words, which is Japanese-made loanwords is called Wasei-gairaigo. Wasei-eigo, or Japanese made English is one of Wasei-gairaigo that is used in Japan. In terms of Wasei-Eigo, the meaning from original English is changed. Thus, confusion in deciphering its true meaning is inevitable. Many scholars or people who know English or even people who uses English as their mother language often reach difficulties while trying to understand the meaning. Understanding those words‟ part-of-speech is important as a first step, since they are made as singular or compound words. Some words morphologically changes as they develop. Those changes are abbreviation and affixation. C. Bally‟s theory of field of meaning is capable to be used in analyzing the true meaning of Wasei-eigo. Both combinations are options for people who want to learn Wasei-eigo. Normally, people would look up to dictionary as they encounter the words. By using this technique, it is possible to decipher the meaning themself when they don‟t have dictionary with them.
