Abstract

Keeping a traditional activity in the middle of social change from farming to industry is a hard effort. It needs a high-motivated person to do such activity. And it is shown in Distant Thunder by Mitsuo as the main character. Motivation makes Mitsuo decides which way of life he is going to choose. Motivation has also affected his effort in achieving his goal. And it explains his way maintain his farm in the middle of the threaths and changes. In order to see Mitsuo's motivation, the writer uses two theories of motivation; Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Vroom's Expectancy theory. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is needed to see Mitsuo's needs fulfillment as a way to maintain his hothouse. Vroom's expectancy theory is used to measure Mitsuo's motivation in maintaining his job. From this point, the writer is able to see the effect of motivation in a person's effort. These two theories also reveal Mitsuo's manner in facing the industrial changes.
