Abstract

This study attempts to present a Post-colonial reading of the novel A Far Horizon written by Meira Chand. The novel portrays the ambivalence of colonial discourse as represented through the colonizer characters in the novel. In a colonial situation, the colonized is always portrayed as the oppressed figure as the impact of colonization. By raising the issues above, this study is aimed to present different mode in representing the colonizer figure which has always been portrayed as a superior person. John Zephaniah Holwell is depicted as the oppressed figure among the native culture because of his anxiety and alienation of the native land itself. Post-colonial theory mainly suggested by Homi Bhabha and Bill Ashcroft are used to analyze the issues discussed in this study. By applying the theory, the study finds that the colonizer who likes othering the colonized people can be so much dependent on the indigenous presence. Displacement and alienation do not always happen to the colonized people, but it can happen to the colonizer as represented by John Zephaniah Holwell. The alienation of vision works in two ways, the colonizers and the indigenous are alienating each other. Thus, colonial discourse is not fix one for all, it is rather ambivalent.
