Abstract

Answer Me is a story written by Susanna Tamaro. It narrates about an orphaned girl named Rosa who faces life’s struggle after her mother died. Instead of her troubled past, she desperately searches for a sign that she is loved. Her searching for love leads her to the ultimate question in life, which is about her existence in the world, toward its relation with God’s existence. The problem that is analyzed in this thesis is her searching for her existence; how Rosa perceives the understanding about the existence of herself and what is the final answer about her existence that is implied in the story. In analyzing the problem, qualitative method is used by elaborating monologues, dialogues, and metaphors in the novel. This paper discusses Rosa’s struggle in searching the truth using existentialism philosophy, mainly suggested by Søren Kierkegaard as the father of existentialism. By applying the theory, the study finds that Rosa manages to find her authentic existence by subjectivity manner in spite of society’s opinion toward her fate. The existence that she embraces in the end of the story is in the form of faith, which also has doubt as its element.
