Abstract
This study aims to describe the word-formation processes of the register used by traffic police officers at Satlantas Polrestabes Surabaya. The data was mainly analyzed by using the theory on word-formation processes proposed by Laurie Bauer (1988), supported by George Yule (2010) and Harimurti Kridalaksana (1992), meanwhile the register was identified based on Janet Holmes’ theory (1992). The data was obtained from the interview conducted on 17 March-14 April 2010 at Satlantas Polrestabes Surabaya. The participants of the research consist of the operators at Satlantas Polrestabes Surabaya and the traffic police officers on the highway of Surabaya. The data was obtained by recording the conversation between the operators and the traffic police officers, transcribing the necessary data into written form, arranging the data into several units based on the long pauses made by the speakers, and collecting supporting information to obtain a thorough comprehension on the topic. After that, the data was selected based on its significance and then analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method to classify the terms categorized as the traffic police register in order to analyze its word formation processes. The study finds out that there are 63 register terms in the data. They have undergone certain word-formation processes, which are affixation, reduplication, clipping, compounding, blending, acronyms, abbreviation, alphabetical symbol, eponyms, borrowing, and multiple processes. There are no back-formation, coinage, conversion (zero-derivation), unique morphs, suppletion, meta-analysis processes found in the data.
