Abstract

This study is aimed to reveal the phenomenon of convergence speech used by a radio announcer of English radio talk show. The main purpose of this study is to find out how the announcer accommodated his speech on talk show. The conversation occured between the announcer, an English graduate and the phone caller as a second language learner. It is considered that either the announcer or the participants did not have equal level of English competence. Hence, they need a strategy to bridge the gap between them. In this study, the writer applies qualitative method to analyze the phenomenon of convergence speech in the conversation between them. In order to collect the data, the writer recorded the program of ‟‟English by Radio‟‟ talk show in four conversations by using a tape recorder. According to Giles (1991) there are two types of communication accommodation strategies within the conversations: convergence speech and divergence speech. And the result of the study here indicates that when the conversation occurs, the announcer and the participants of ”English by radio” talk show program mostly applied convergence speech strategy. It happened because the phone callers were not fluent in English. Therefore, the announcer tried to accommodate the phone callers speech during the conversation in order to make them feel more comfortable.
