Abstract

This study analyzes how Joan‟s disguise as a man becomes a result of patriarchal system which is revealed in Pope Joan film. Concerning the purpose, the study conducted here focuses on patriarchal system that oppresses women and positions them as the other. Patriarchal system believes that women are naturally inferior. Women‟s biological essentialism becomes the root of their inferiority. By disguising as a man, Joan is elected to be a Pope by papacy environment. In analyzing the narrative aspects, the writer will use Simone de Beauvoir‟s concept in observing women‟s otherness in the society and eagerness to escape from their inferior status. Setting and costume, including its properties, are used to strengthen the narrative aspect. Joan‟s decision to disguise as a man becomes the way to negotiate patriarchal system operating in societies which are depicted in this film. Negotiating patriarchal system reveals Joan‟s attempt to be equal and more acceptable in the society. By making herself equal, Joan can escape from society‟s justification as an inferior being. The finding shows that Joan‟s attempt to be equal is rejected by patriarchal society. It can be seen when Joan‟s name is removed from The Chronicle of the Pope.
