Abstract

The study examines the representation of Orientalism idea which is portrayed in the film Avatar. The film tells about the conflict between human and native people in Planet Pandora, where human exploits the land and oppresses the native. This study explores in what way the idea of Orientalism is represented and how both narrative and non-narrative aspects of the film helped in delivering that representation. This study will be completed by applying Orientalism theory proposed by Edward Said. Thereby, this research will be a qualitative research where the data is taken from the film Avatar, library research, journals, and other resources which appropriate in conducting the analysis. This study discovers that Avatar embodies a great deal of Orientalism practice through three interdependent pursuits. First, it comes from the bias representation of Pandora and its inhabitants which mostly portrayed their dangerous and mystical side. Second is the role of knowledge which helps human to represents the native and place them in higher position. Third is the functioning of colonial power as a result of human superiority. This study also finds several elements of non narrative aspects which support the idea of Orientalism, especially in drawing a clear distinction between human and the Na’vi.
