Abstract

This study attempts to examine the issue rose in August Wilson’s play Joe Turner’s Come & Gone, focusing on the character search for Loomis’ identity. The drama portrays identity issue especially African-American, discrimination toward African slave, diaspora, and great migration in 1910s. The African-American must struggle with two identities, one that is African and African-American and often undermined in oppressive white society. The struggle that creates a double consciousness in African-Americans most clearly in characterization of Herald Loomis, an African-American male who cannot become whole until he reconnects with his African self. The significance of juba and blues song is found in the fact that the individual must discover himself or herself in order to be an authentic human being and in order to have any chance for love and happiness in the world. In analyzing the issue, the writer used a qualitative method by elaborating dialogues, acts, events, and conflicts in the drama and applies the theory which is suitable to the discussion. In this study the writer uses the theory of African-American criticism suggested by W.E.B Du Bois applied in the analysis. By applying the theory, it is found that Loomis has “double” identity as the result of racial discrimination by the white Americans.
