Abstract

This study examines about the heteronormativity toward a lesbian-butch in Kimberly Pierce’s Boys Don’t Cry. The study has two main questions: first, how the form of heteronormativity is portrayed in the movie and secondly, how the main character who is a lesbian-butch negotiates with heteronormativity built in her society. Queer theory especially Heteronormativity suggested by Gayle Rubin will be used as the main theory. Thereby, this research is a qualitative research where the data is taken from the film Boys Don’t Cry, library research, journals, and other resources which appropriate in conducting the analysis. This study finds that the forms of heteronormativity toward a lesbian-butch in the movie are violence, sexual abuse, discrimination, and murder. Teena strives to negotiate heteronormativity by changing her appearance, using drug and creating lies to the people around her. This study also finds several elements of non narrative aspects which support the portrayal of Heteronormativity and negotiating process of Teena Brandon as a lesbian.
