Abstract
When adults, who typically have an accent, learn to pronounce or speak L2, their accent will sound as foreign accent. Therefore, people consider that the sound patterns or structures of the LI ont color="#FF0000">influenceont> the production of their L2. In order to find out further about the ont color="#FF0000">influenceont> of the L1 in the production of the L2 sounds, the following study was conducted by using two different ont color="#FF0000">languageont>s, that is Indonesian us the LI and English as the L2. Two questions appeared in this study: what English consonant sounds which are pronounced incorrectly by the students of D3 in English ont color="#FF0000">languageont> of Airlangga University and what English vowel sounds which are pronounced incorrectly by the students of D3 in English ont color="#FF0000">languageont> of Airlangga University. An elicitation paragraph was given to be read by six respondents from D3 students of Airlangga University who participate in this study, while the writer recorded it. Then the phonetic ranscription in terms of broad transcription was used to identify and determine the sounds that were pronounced incorrectly by the respondents. Results obtained from this study show that there were seven English consonants: /k/, /z/, /v/,/∫/, /θ/, /σ1, and Id/ and ten English vowels: /i:!, /з:!, /Ə:/, /u:/, /n:/, /ə:/, /æ/, / ə u/,and /I/ that pose respondents difficulty to pronounce. The greatest difficult consonants were Izl and /v/, while the greatest difficult vowels were /i:/, /ə/, and /æ/. Those difficulties emerged mostly due to the interference of their ont color="#FF0000">nativeont> ont color="#FF0000">languageont> and also the ont color="#FF0000">influenceont> of rapid speech.
