Abstract

The Da Vinic Code (2003) is a novel written by Dan Brown. The novel tells about the effort of Robert Langdon in cracking the secret which is symbolized through Da Vinci' the Last Supper. One issue brought by this novel is about the representation of Holy Grail. Actually, the secret of Holy Grail is mere talking about the life story of Mary Magdalene as Jesus' spouse. Further, based on this novel, Mary Magdalene is a woman whose womb carries Jesus' bloodline. This representation of Mary Magdalene is very different to what the Roman Catholic Church has depicted. For the Roman Catholic Church, Mary Magdalene is one of Jesus' followers. She is a woman who came at the Jesus' crucifixion and a witness of Jesus' resurrection. This study is focused on those different representations of Mary Magdalene. The differences are seen through the perspective of New Historicism, where both literary text and non literary text are taken in an equal position. Moreover, how interpreters interpret the information will gain the different representation of Mary Magdalene. Through the process of selecting and contextualizing, the interpreters have taken a certain discursive formation based on their own background and their own intention. Therefore, based on New Historicism perspective, there is nothing but fact in those representations, the only thing is interpretation.
